QVR.1 - "Stop Bailing Water"

Leading Thought: While everyone is clamoring for attention, silence the distractions in order to prioritize and execute on your own terms.

In the billions of years that our pale blue dot has whirled through the cosmos, there has never been a more bustling and connected time to be alive. We can instantly call, text, or email anyone on the planet. We can stream endless hours of any of our favorite movies and television shows from wherever we’re standing. We can check the current weather in Positano, tune into the local news out of Reykjavik, and explore the scenic harbour of Wiencke Island. With a few swipes of a finger, we can find a new partner. We can remotely monitor our homes, hitch a ride in a stranger’s car, order food from a local mom-and-pop, and even charter a private jet. The world is literally at your fingertips, and - conversely - so are you.

Today, the majority of us are tethered to a small brick of glass and metal; a small brick that insistently beeps and buzzes with new notifications that must be tended to immediately. Yet, opening these “urgent” alerts and responding to their “needs” quickly begins to feel more like bailing water out of a leaking boat. You’re working hard to get rid of the problem, but you really aren’t getting anywhere you want to be. Meanwhile, everyone is panicking that they’re going to drown in a puddle of water unless you start bailing faster. This is where you stop. This is the part where you stop bailing water, ignore the panic, and drop the bucket. This is where you stop trying to play catch up with the notifications, set your phone to silent, and toss it aside for as long as you need. Sounds crazy, but bear with me.

When the world has you at its fingertips, you can quickly be pulled below the surface by the vast array of random, bizarre, and unnecessary distractions. Instead, close that gateway and silence those distractions so that you can clearly identify the causes of panic, prioritize the true issues at hand, and execute a plan to Macgyver a patch for those leaks. Keep in mind, however, that there are risks in taking such an approach if fear and panic are both left to their own devices for too long without a remedy. They love company, hate being ignored, and can spread like an epidemic, so focus up and act quickly. Temporarily going dark or off the grid isn’t the same as taking a vacation. It doesn’t mean that your ignoring your contacts or just letting chaos ensue. It means you’ve decided to distance yourself from the panic in order to focus entirely on producing results that will eventually help everyone. Set your phone to silent and stop bailing water.
